National Immunization Awareness Month

National Immunization Awareness Month National Immunization Awareness Month highlights the importance of vaccinations for people of all ages.

Vaccinations play a key role in the elimination of so many serious diseases today. Things like diphtheria, measles and polio are extremely rare thanks to advancements in medicine to protect us against them.

People of all ages from infants to adults should maintain required vaccinations to continue to be protected against dangerous diseases. Things like influenza and shingles can have catastrophic effects on people and even lead to more serious health complications.

During National Immunization Awareness Month (NIAM) in August we’re encouraged to highlight the importance of vaccinations for people of all ages.

This observance began back in 1995 as a way to help increase the awareness of the benefits of immunizations and it remains a critical mission.

As we head back into a new school year, it’s also the perfect time to remind parents and caregivers about the protections they can provide to their children with vaccinations.

Some of the important immunizations for adolescents and adults include:

  • Pertussis (whooping cough)
  • Tetanus
  • Polio
  • Measles, mumps and rubella
  • Meningitis

While the topic of vaccine effectiveness has been hotly contested, it’s important to remember that they have been used for years and staying up-to-date with immunizations not only helps to keep us healthy, but it also helps prevent the spread of disease among others around us who may be even more vulnerable.

As health practitioners, and families, we are all responsible for making sure that we are getting the care and protection we need. If you think you or your child might be behind on your vaccinations or want more information about how they can offer protection against serious diseases be sure to speak with a trusted professional without delay.
